Superfoil 40

Description from Y.Eero, Managing Director, Seahawk Ltd. www.seahawk.ee, 26th May 2003

I think most of the information on Superfoil 40 vessels is already available directly from the builders shipyard (see below). Anyhow the present owners are still interested to change the vessel to bigger ones (but similar type as fuel consumtion is very low) i.e. she is declared today for sale, even succsessfully trading between Tallinn and Helsinki. In case of any interest we can advise that the sale price is USD 8.0 MIO and we are the Owner's (Lindaliini Ltd.) brokers. In case of strong (well known or financially strong) Buyer we can speak about possible leasing.

The catamaran constructed by Almaz Marine Yard (designed by the St.-Petersburg branch of the British company "MTD" (Marine Technology Development), is the fastest passenger ferry in a pattern and gains speed about 55 knots (more than 100 km/hour). Now it will take only 50 minutes to travel from Tallinn to Helsinki.

The Superfoil-40 will start operating between the Estonian and Finnish capitals already in the beginning of this summer and will perform 5 return trips daily. 300 passengers to be accommodated both in business and economy class cabins equipped with comfortable aircraft type seats and the panoramic windows will provide excellent view. When traveling passengers may visit bar and duty free shop.

The vessel constructed by Almaz yard has no analogues throughout the world and completely meets customer's requirements. Speed and comfort is the basic concepts for the idea of the vessel. The hull of catamaran type provides the ferry seaworthiness up to 5 points, while the applied patented hydrofoil system and after interceptors ensure the vessel to develop high speed with reduced water resistance.

Wide two-leaf doors arranged on both sides allow to reduce essentially time of landing and disembarkation of passengers. The estimated time assigned for this operation makes about half an hour including cleaning of cabins and refueling.

The contract comes out from the tender which Almaz Marine Yard has succeeded in against several Russian and western shipyards. During 12 months from the date of its signing the shipbuilders have done considerable work having applied up-to-date technologies of construction and equipment installation. For the first the shipyard used polymer materials mounting power plant and propulsive units and all technical documentation was forwarded from the designers via E-Mail.

The ferry with deadweight of 122 tons has been constructed completely of Russian marine aluminum alloy under the rules and regulations of Det Norske Veritas (DNV) international classification society. At the same time the welders from Almaz Marine Yard have passed the qualification tests and obtained DNV certificates of conformity to the international standard ISO 9606-2.

Mr. Enn Rohula, director for Linda Lines Express, said that the new ferry would become popular both in Tallinn and in Helsinki and would be able to meet competition not only with other ships operated on this line, but could also substitute helicopter aircraft on the market of passengers conveyance. Future prospects for Superfoil-40 appear to be optimistic as all tickets for the maiden trip were sold out even one month ago.
